Mission & Outreach

At Second Reformed, mission and outreach are how we live out our faith together. Whether it's serving our community, caring for one another, or learning and growing—each ministry helps us follow Jesus. We also use our finances to support causes that reflect Christ’s love for our world. There’s a place for everyone to get involved and make a difference.

Food Share

Food Share is a monthly outreach effort that brings together Second Reformed Church, the Pella Community Food Shelf, and our neighbors in rural southern Marion County. Each month, volunteers gather at the Pella Community Food Shelf to pack bags of groceries that are later delivered to individuals and families in Attica, Bussey, and Harvey.

Packing is a simple, all-ages activity that takes about 45 minutes and makes a real difference in the lives of others. It’s a great way to serve together, build community, and share God’s love through practical care.

Start Small

Start Small partners with agencies like Head Start to support refugee and immigrant families in central Iowa by providing essentials such as diapers, pull-ups, and wipes. These small items make a big impact—offering dignity, comfort, and care during times of great uncertainty.

Start Small's coordinator meets weekly with trusted liaisons. These liaisons know the families personally, understand their needs, and are committed to helping them thrive. For families facing barriers like transportation, they even deliver diapers directly to their homes.

At Second Reformed, we support this work through donation drives and ongoing involvement.

Because every child deserves a clean diaper.

Summer Sack Lunch Program

Second Reformed Church is excited to kick off our Summer Sack Lunch Program on Monday, June 2! We’ll be serving free sack lunches three days a week—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. Join us at the playground area behind the church at 612 Broadway Street - in between the church and the Pella Community Center.

Each lunch includes a sandwich, chips, fruit, cookies, and a drink—and best of all, it’s completely free. Everyone is welcome to come enjoy a meal and spend time connecting with others in the community.

We’re grateful to the Pella Community Foundation for their generous $2,500 grant that helps make this program possible. Lunches will be available all summer long, wrapping up the week before school starts again in August.

Refugee Engagement & Support Alliance (RESAP)

RESAP (Refugee Engagement & Support Alliance of Pella) is a local program that helps welcome refugee families as they begin new lives in the U.S. Through Private Sponsor Groups (PSGs), everyday community members work together to provide support with housing, school enrollment, job searches, and more.

Second Reformed members are involved in many ways—serving on the board, volunteering their time, and giving financially through special benevolent gifts.

You can help too! Whether you’d like to volunteer or donate, there’s a place for you in this important work. Financial gifts help cover a refugee family’s first 90 days in Pella, and in-kind donations (like furniture and household items) are always appreciated.

Thank you for helping make Pella a place of refuge and welcome!

Over and Above
Giving

Thanks to our church family's generous support, we not only met our ministry needs for the year in 2024—we were also able to fully fund our over-and-above benevolent giving goals. Through congregational giving, we were able to share God’s love in tangible ways—supporting vital ministries both close to home and across the globe.

In addition to our ongoing support of our long-standing RCA Global Mission Partner, we were able to share benevolent gifts with the following organizations in 2024 (listed alphabetically):

  • Bread for the World

  • Central College

  • Crossroads of Pella

  • Jicarilla Apache Reformed Church

  • Local School Lunches

  • New Brunswick Theological Seminary

  • RCA Cares Network for Disaster Relief

  • Room for All

  • Seven Twenty-five Ministries

  • Start Small Diapers

  • United Christians International, Haiti

We are so grateful for the many ways our church family supports the ministry and mission of Second Reformed Church—through their time, talents, and treasures. Through their generousity, we extend Christ’s love far beyond our walls.
